As part of the decommissioning of Channel NZ (formally known as Refining NZ), Industrial Site Services was contacted to lower the three iconic flare stacks. This was a somewhat bittersweet project for us, as we were the ones who put them up in the first place! The stacks are 80 meters high, made up of four sections that each weighed 15 tonnes. The heaviest lift was three sections at 45 tonnes. Working closely with Channel NZ HSE, operations and constant phone calls to now retired former employee, we were able to do a huge amount of prep work before the team arrived onsite and started the job. Once the experienced team turned up, they really hit the ground running. With good plans and systems in place, we managed to knock out a nine-week project in only four!
